Babysitter Checklist
This checklist
should be reviewed by the babysitter and parent(s) of the children to
be watched before the parents leave. It is important that the babysitter
clearly understands his/her responsibilities, where emergency equipment
is located, and other important information.
Emergency Information
* Where can the parent(s) be reached in an emergency?
* If a pager is expected to be called to reach someone, how is the information entered?
* If the parent(s) can not be reached, who is the alternate contact?
* Is a written emergency contact listed posted near the phone?
* Where are the phones located in the home?
* Is there a fire extinguisher? If so, where is it and how does it work?
* Where are the smoke alarms located? What does it sound like?
* If there is a carbon Monoxide detector, where is it located? What does it sound like?
* What is the Escape Plan? If there is a fire, do the children have a meeting
place identified outside the home?
* Is there a first aid kit available? If so, where is it located?
Other Important Information
* Are medications, hazardous products, matches and lighters out of reach
of children?
* Are you expected to provide any medications to the child?
* Are the doors and windows properly secured? How do the locks work?
* How do the bedroom windows operate if they must be used as an emergency
exit during a fire?
* If allowed to cook, how does the stove and/or microwave work?
* What are the rules allowing visitors? This includes friends of the children,
your own friends, and unexpected visitors at the door.
* If there is a fireplace, what are the rules? (We do NOT recommend that
teen-age babysitters be allowed to use a fireplace or other open flame
device except for the stove.)
REMEMBER! In an emergency, call 911! Don’t be afraid to call just
because you’re not SURE something is an emergency. If you can’t
handle the problem, CALL FOR HELP!
