General Administrative Support

Running a volunteer organization with as many as 100 or more members, a facility nearly 25,000 square feet, and a large vehicle fleet requires an extensive amount of administrative support. There are tasks of all kinds to be done, from simple copying or filing all the way to complex projects. Our administrative personnel are an integral part of the organization, and are recognized by the entire membership as a valuable asset. If you're not sure you want to ride fire trucks or ambulances but want to help, there's room for you, too! We'll tailor your duties to fit your particular interests and skills as much as possible. Facility Management/Maintenance

Team member responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the facility that includes the fire station, hall, and surrounding exterior grounds. Varied duties include managing various contracts for support requirements such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other services where specialized skills/knowledge is required. Could also perform maintenance duties, depending on individual's skills and interests. Top

Landscaping/Grounds Maintenance

Team member responsible for care of the exterior grounds of the facility. Includes care of plants, bushes, trees, and grass, snow removal, and maintaining the quality of the exterior walks, drives, and parking areas. Ensures that equipment needed for exterior maintenance (mowers, trimmers, snow blowers, etc.) is serviced and in working condition. Could include management of support contracts associated with the exterior grounds. Top

Bingo Operations

Works as part of a crew to staff the bingo operation held weekly at the fire station hall. Varied duties include sales of game materials or other items, floor operations, calling games, setup and closing, or other duties depending on the person's interest/skills. Duties are varied enough to ensure that anyone interested can help! (Note: Everyone who applies for membership of our department is submitted for a criminal background check. This is a Fairfax County requirement for all operational members and is also used for administrative members because of the requirements to handle funds.) Top

General Hall Operations

Works as part of a team to organize and staff various fundraising events for the support of the Burke VFRD. These events may vary widely, depending on the interests of the organization. Some possibilities that have been discussed include craft fairs, used book collection/sales, pancake breakfasts, spaghetti dinners, and breakfast with Santa, along with a variety of other ideas. The focus is not just to generate revenue but as important is to bring the public to the fire station and make Burke VFRD a central part of the community. Top

Assistant Treasurer

The assistant treasurer works with the Burke VFRD Treasurer to manage the financial activities of the department. Includes payment of bills, managing the checking and investment accounts, development of budgets, processing of revenues from fund drives, hall activities, or other sources. The principal software used by the department to manage its accounts is Quickbooks Pro. (Note: Everyone who applies for membership of our department is submitted for a criminal background check. This is a Fairfax County requirement for all operational members and is also used for administrative members because of the requirements to handle funds.) Top

Public Relations/Life Safety Education

Works under the direction of the Burke VFRD Public Relations Officer. Interfaces with the media and the public to disseminate information about the Burke VFRD and its activities, including education and training programs. Life Safety Education provides diverse educational training to the public in a variety of programs. Good public speaking skills a plus for this position. Top

CPR Instructor

Burke VFRD provides Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instruction to the local community through regularly scheduled training programs. This training includes both CPR for Family and Friends (formerly called Citizen CPR) and advanced levels. CPR instructors do not have to be operational (firefighter or EMT) in order to be certified and provide instruction. This has always been a strong public education program for our department and additional instructors are always welcome. Training to become an instructor is provided by our own certified Instructor-Trainers. Top

Grants/Endowments Development

Burke VFRD is developing a program to focus on obtaining grants and endowments that may be available to nonprofit public service organizations. These could be from both government and private sources. We are looking for an individual or individuals who have some background in the processes associated with grants and endowments to assist us in this endeavor. Persons involved in this project would become members of our department and work on a voluntary basis. Top

Corporate/Business Relations

Members working in this area would be responsible for development of relations with the business and corporate communities. The focus would be to develop support from these communities for the various initiatives of the Burke VFRD, and could include direct fundraising, along with sponsorship of specific projects or activities (for example, life safety education programs). Public speaking and making presentations to small groups could be involved. Top

Scouting Support Coordinator

The Burke VFRD has always had a strong relationship with the local scouting groups in our area, including both Boy and Girl Scouts of all levels. We have provided frequent training and educational programs to meet a variety of these organization's requirements. We are looking for members who would like to focus on this area, developing relationships with these groups, identifying their needs that we have the ability to support, and coordinating our department's resources to meet those needs as best as possible. Top

Web Site Operations

The Burke VFRD Web site located at www.bvfrd.org is an important tool for our organization, both to provide information to the public and as an INTRANET for department business. We are looking for members to be part of a team to maintain the site, keep the design fresh, modify/update information, and develop/implement ideas for improving its functionality. This is your chance to have a highly visible outlet for the public to see your ideas and skills! Top
